vision-language model

nounAlso: VLM, visual language model, large vision-language model, LVLM

In plain wordsAn AI model that understands images and text together — it can describe a photo, answer questions about a chart or find the picture that matches a sentence.

  1. A model trained jointly on visual and textual data to relate the two. The term covers two families: contrastive dual encoders such as CLIPCLIP, prop. n.: An OpenAI model that learned to match pictures with their captions from hundreds of millions of web examples, so it can judge how well any piece of text describes any image., which embed images and text in a shared space for retrieval and zero-shotzero-shot learning, n.: Doing a task without being shown a single example of it — say, an AI sorting reviews into positive and negative just from being told to, or recognizing an animal it never saw in training. classification but do not generate text; and generative VLMs, which connect a vision encoder to a language model and output text conditioned on images — captions, answers, extracted fields, reasoning about diagrams. Since about 2023 'VLM' most often means the generative kind, a subtype of multimodal large language modelmultimodal large language model, n.: An AI language model that can also take in — and sometimes produce — pictures, sound or video, so you can show it a photo or speak to it, not just type.. VLMs underpin document understandingdocument understanding, n.: Using AI to read documents such as invoices, forms, contracts and scientific papers the way a person does, taking in layout, tables and charts as well as words, to pull out the information needed., visual question answeringvisual question answering, n.: Asking an AI a question about a picture, such as 'How many people are wearing hats?', and having it answer in words. and screen-reading agents and, with action outputs added, vision-language-action modelsvision-language-action model, n.: An AI model that looks through a robot's cameras, reads an instruction such as 'put the cup in the sink', and turns both straight into the robot's movements. for robots.

A small VLM pulls totals from scanned invoices more reliably than our old OCR pipeline.

Origin

Joint vision-and-language pretraining dates to 2019 models such as ViLBERT and LXMERT, and CLIPCLIP, prop. n.: An OpenAI model that learned to match pictures with their captions from hundreds of millions of web examples, so it can judge how well any piece of text describes any image. (2021) made contrastive image–text models mainstream. DeepMind presented Flamingo (2022) as a 'visual language model', and open generative VLMs multiplied after LLaVA (2023).
