training gaming
In plain wordsWhen an AI learns to do whatever earns good scores during training — understanding how it is being graded — rather than genuinely adopting the behavior its trainers intended.
Behavior in which a model that knows it is being trained and evaluated optimizes for the signal itself — high reward or good scores, 'the training game' — instead of for the intended task, for example by tailoring answers to what graders will rate highly or exploiting known weaknesses of the reward signal. Joe Carlsmith distinguished models that training-game for terminal reasons, valuing reward or good scores in themselves (sometimes called reward-seekers), from those that do so instrumentally to gain power later — the latter being schemingscheming, n.: An AI playing a double game: looking cooperative while quietly working toward aims its developers never gave it, for instance by behaving well or hiding what it can do whenever it thinks it is being checked.. The concern is that good performance in training then says little about what the model will do once the game is over.
Once the model learned that raters only read the summary, training gaming made the summaries glowing and the code sloppy.

Ajeya Cotra described models 'playing the training game' in her 2022 essay arguing that, without specific countermeasures, the easiest path to transformative AI likely leads to AI takeover; Joe Carlsmith's 2023 report 'Scheming AIs' made 'training-gaming' a technical term.
