ISO/IEC 22989
In plain wordsAn international standard that fixes agreed meanings for basic AI words — such as AI system, machine learning and trustworthiness — so that other standards, contracts and laws can use the same vocabulary.
The international standard 'Information technology — Artificial intelligence — Artificial intelligence concepts and terminology', published jointly by the International Organization for Standardization (ISO) and the International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC) through their AI subcommittee ISO/IEC JTC 1/SC 42ISO/IEC JTC 1/SC 42, prop. n.: The international committee that writes the main worldwide technical standards on artificial intelligence, run jointly by the standards bodies ISO and IEC.. It defines core terms such as AI systemAI system, n.: A complete piece of technology that uses AI to do something, such as screening loan applications, driving a car or chatting with customers, including the AI model and the software around it., AI agent, machine learningmachine learning, n.: A way of building software that learns from examples instead of following rules written by a programmer. Shown thousands of labeled photos, for instance, a program can learn to recognize cats., neural networkneural network, n.: A kind of computer program that learns a task from examples by tuning thousands to billions of connections between simple number-crunching units, an arrangement loosely inspired by nerve cells in the brain., explainabilityexplainability, n.: How well the reasons behind an AI system's outputs can be put into terms that people can understand, check and, if needed, challenge., robustnessrobustness, n.: An AI system's ability to keep working correctly and safely when conditions change — unfamiliar data, noisy inputs, or people deliberately trying to trick it. and controllability; describes the AI system life cycle and the main stakeholder roles (AI providers, producers, customers, partners and subjects); and outlines properties of trustworthiness. It contains no requirements and cannot be certified against; it is the shared vocabulary on which other SC 42 standards, including ISO/IEC 42001ISO/IEC 42001, prop. n.: An international standard for how an organization should run its AI work responsibly — policies, risk checks, roles and records — which outside auditors can certify, much as ISO 9001 does for quality., build.
The contract defines 'AI system' by reference to ISO/IEC 22989.
Origin
Developed by ISO/IEC JTC 1/SC 42, the joint AI subcommittee created in 2017, and published in July 2022 as ISO/IEC 22989:2022, alongside ISO/IEC 23053:2022, which describes a framework for AI systems using machine learning.
