agent swarm
In plain wordsA large group of AI agents working at the same time on parts of a problem, usually with little central control — a name loosely borrowed from swarms of insects.
A multi-agent systemmulti-agent system, n.: A setup in which several AI agents, each with its own role or point of view, work together — or compete — on a problem, passing messages and results among themselves. in which many agent instances — often dozens or more, frequently copies of one model given different instructions — work concurrently on a problem, coordinating through shared state, message passing or a light coordinator rather than a strict hierarchy. Usage is loose: in marketing and informal speech it can mean any large multi-agent deployment, such as tens of parallel background agentsbackground agent, n.: An AI agent you hand a task to and then leave alone: it works by itself in the cloud, often for many minutes or hours, and reports back with finished work for you to review. each fixing a different issue in a codebase; in OpenAI's experimental Swarm library (2024) it named a minimalist framework built around handoffshandoff, n.: The moment one AI agent passes a conversation or task to another, better-suited agent — like a call-center operator transferring you to the right department. between agents. Claimed advantages are throughput and diversity of approaches; documented problems are cost, duplicated effort, conflicting edits and the burden of verifying many outputs.
We let an agent swarm attack the migration overnight, then spent the morning reviewing two hundred pull requests.
Origin
Echoes swarm intelligenceswarm intelligence, n.: The teamwork that appears when crowds of simple creatures or machines, such as ants, bees or small robots, each respond only to what is nearby, with nobody in charge, yet together solve problems. (Gerardo Beni and Jing Wang, 1989) and swarm roboticsswarm robotics, n.: Coordinating large groups of simple robots that follow local rules and talk only to their neighbors, so useful group behavior emerges without a central controller, as in ant colonies or bird flocks.. The label was applied to language-model agents by mid-2023, when Kye Gomez's open-source Swarms framework appeared; OpenAI released its explicitly educational 'Swarm' library in October 2024, and from 2025 'agent swarm' became common in product launches and social media for massively parallel agents.
Usage note
Unlike classical swarm intelligenceswarm intelligence, n.: The teamwork that appears when crowds of simple creatures or machines, such as ants, bees or small robots, each respond only to what is nearby, with nobody in charge, yet together solve problems., where simple agents following local rules produce emergent collective behavior, LLM agent swarms are usually launched and coordinated centrally, and their collective behavior is engineered. The word is often used for effect rather than to name a precise architecture.
