activation vector
In plain wordsThe list of numbers a neural network produces at one layer for one input — a snapshot of its internal state. In steering, also a direction added to that state to shift behavior.

Neural networks
The vector of activationactivation, n.: The numbers a neural network computes inside itself as it processes an input — a reading of which of its artificial neurons are firing, and how strongly, at that moment. values output by a layer, or by a component such as an attention headattention head, n.: One of several parallel attention units inside a transformer layer. Each head learns its own way of deciding which words to connect, so different heads can specialize in different patterns. or MLPmultilayer perceptron, n.: A neural network made of several layers of artificial neurons, each connected to every neuron in the next layer. It is the simplest kind of deep network and a component of almost every modern model. block, for a given input. In a transformertransformer, n.: The design behind today's chatbots and much of modern AI. It handles text by letting every word look at every other word and decide which of them matter for understanding it. one such vector exists in the residual streamresidual stream, n.: The running internal state that flows through a transformer model from layer to layer; each layer reads from it and adds its own contribution, like editors annotating a shared document. for every token position at every layer, with as many dimensions as the model width. Activation vectors are the raw material of interpretability: probesprobing, n.: Testing what information is hidden inside an AI model by training a small, separate predictor on the model's internal activity: if the predictor can recover something, the model has stored it somewhere. read them, sparse autoencoderssparse autoencoder, n.: A small add-on network trained to break an AI model's tangled internal signals into a much larger set of simpler pieces, most of which can be labeled with an understandable concept. decompose them into featuresfeature (interpretability), n.: A concept or property that a neural network represents internally — such as 'is French', 'mentions a bridge' or 'this code has a bug' — usually corresponding to a direction in its internal activity., and activation patchingactivation patching, n.: An experiment that copies part of a model's internal state from its run on one input into its run on another, to see which internal parts actually cause a change in the answer. swaps them between runs to locate where information is computed.
We cached the activation vectors at every layer for all 2,000 prompts and trained a probe on each.

Steering
A direction in activation spaceactivation space, n.: The imaginary space of all possible internal states of one layer of a neural network, where each input becomes a point and related meanings tend to share places or directions. that is added to, or used to modify, a model's activations in order to change its behavior; in this sense interchangeable with steering vectorsteering vector, n.: A direction inside an AI model's internal activity that, when added while the model runs, nudges its behavior — say, more upbeat, more honest or fixated on a topic — without retraining it.. The usage spread from a 2023 demonstration that adding the activation difference between two short prompts could redirect GPT-2-XL's completions.
Origin
A descriptive compound long used in neural-network writing for the vector of a layer's unit outputs; its first use has not been established. The steering sense spread from Alexander Matt Turner and colleagues' May 2023 LessWrong post 'Steering GPT-2-XL by adding an activation vector', which preceded their activation additionactivation addition, n.: A simple way to steer a language model: run two contrasting prompts such as 'Love' and 'Hate', take the difference between the model's internal states, and add it while the model writes. paper.
Usage note
Activations are not weights: weights are the fixed, learned parameters of a model, while activations are computed afresh for every input and change from token to token.
